  10. WhereIsIt? was designed with a single goal in mind - to create an easy-to-
  11. use, but powerful media catalog program, made to make our lives easier.
  12. Familiar and simplified user interface, extensive search capabilities and
  13. archive file support, combined with powerful report generator and compact,
  14. but rich in details database, all that should bring you the ultimate tool
  15. to handle your software collection.

  17. WhereIsIt? is a shareware software. See ORDER.TXT for more information on
  18. how to register this program. Be sure to read carefully the LICENSE.TXT file
  19. before using the program. The unregistered version imposes some limitations
  20. to the user, which are removed by registering the software. More information
  21. about these limitations can be found later in this document.

  54. Where is it? supports any media type Windows can use, including diskettes,
  55. CD-ROMs, removable disks like iomega Zip and Jaz, hard disks, network drives
  56. etc. It will recognize by name and collect useful data for most of them, too.
  57. Also, it is compatible with all Windows-supported file systems, including FAT,
  58. FAT32, and NTFS.

  62. Logical organization of databases, based on one or more catalogs. Each
  63. catalog can easily be transferred as a single file to another computer, a
  64. friend, a public forum...  Small catalog-file size with optional compression,
  65. with approximate usage of 1 MB for 40.000 files and folders (that's about 6
  66. fully filed CD-ROMs). Internal database structure optimized for very efficient
  67. access and small total size. Single-file, transferable catalog storage makes
  68. sharing your data easy.

  72. Fast and easy access to every item's detailed properties, from wherever you
  73. are. Want to get item's description? Just leave mouse pointer on it for a
  74. moment, description will popup as a tool-tip!.

  78. Detailed info on every object in the database (files, folders, disks,
  79. catalogs...) each capable of accepting up to 32 KB characters of description
  80. text, and a thumbnail image. Each file, folder, or disk can have assigned one
  81. or more user-defined, tree-ordered categories, up to 128 user flags, custom-
  82. defined icon... Disks in catalogs can be grouped into disk groups, forming
  83. a hierarchicaly organized, easy to browse and find collection.

  85. Auto-importing descriptions and thumbnails

  87. WhereIsIt offers a plugin system for importing descriptions and thumbnails
  88. during media scan, allowing you to develop your own description plugins and
  89. extend WhereIsIt's description importing capabilities. Included with the
  90. program is a comprehensive collection of plugins, covering all widely used
  91. description file formats, such as 4DOS/NDOS, FILE_ID.DIZ, FILES.BBS,
  92. 00INDEX.TXT... description files, and importing details about audio CDs,
  93. WAV and MP3 audio files, Office documents, EXE files and system libraries,
  94. fonts, HTML files, Adobe Acrobat PDF files, most graphic files etc. Also
  95. included are thumbnail plugins, importing small, downsized images from most
  96. graphic files in use today.

  98. Internal support for many compressed file formats

  100. Handling of most compressed file formats on media scan, including ZIP, ARJ,
  101. RAR, CAB, LHA/LZH, TAR, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZ, SFX... Compressed archive files
  102. can be presented as folders, showing their content. Archive files can be
  103. extracted right out from WhereIsIt? to any folder, and a file compressed
  104. inside archive file can be viewed or launched with associated program with
  105. one click!

  107. Powerful searching finds what you need

  109. Powerful multi-threaded searching, with detailed settings on what to search
  110. for, where to search and how to search. Use either Quick Search to quickly
  111. find your items by name or description, or start up the Advanced Search with
  112. Search Expression Editor, allowing you to write complex search queries using
  113. full set of available search criteria and Boolean logic operators.
  114. Searching for duplicate items is there, too, as well as analyzing how data
  115. has changed since last cataloging, or checking if older or newer versions of
  116. files are present somewhere in the catalog.

  120. Adjustable and powerful report generator adds a final professional touch to
  121. your catalog collection. Export your data to ASCII file, Excel table, rich-

  138. MULTI-LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  139. ======================

  141. This program supports selecting one of prepared languages to be used in
  142. program's user interface, and even preparing language files for currently
  143. unsupported languages (read more about this in program's help file).

  145. Please note that regular shareware version is only shipping with English
  146. and German language file by default, to save on download size. Many other
  147. languages are available and can be downloaded from program's home page on
  148. the Internet.

  150. If, for any reason, you would like to switch back to default English language,
  151. and are unable to do so in program because you can't understand or correctly
  152. display currently selected language, you can run the program from command line
  153. with this special parameter:

  157. This will effectively run the program with English language, ignoring current
  158. language setting in the program.

  161. UNREGISTERED VERSION LIMITATIONS
  162. ================================
  163.  
  164. Unregistered version of WhereIsIt? has build-in some limitations in order to
  165. encourage registering this software. All of the following limitations are
  166. removed when the program is registered using the appropriate license key file.
  167. For more information on how to register please read the ORDER.TXT file.

  169. - The total allowed capacity of all media in a single catalog is limited to
  170.   2 GB. You will not be able to add more disk images to the catalog if the
  171.   total sum of all media capacities in the catalog already exceeds this limit.
  172.   If you want to add more data, you will have to open a new catalog.
  173. - Only one catalog can be opened at the time. If you would like to work with
  174.   another catalog, you must close the current one first.
  175. - Auto-loading catalogs on program startup is disabled. Registered users can
  176.   setup a list of catalogs to load automatically when program is starting, or
  177.   select to open all catalogs that were opened in the last session.
  178. - All reports will include a visible message saying they were generated with
  179.   an unregistered version.
  180. - Tips on program startup can not be disabled in the unregistered version. The
  181.   first tip will always remind you that you are working with an unregistered
  182.   shareware program.
  183. - Script language is only available in registered version. Script language is 
  184.   mostly used for unattended catalog updates, or it can perform special tasks 
  185.   on program startup, for example, updating the catalog data when program 
  186.   starts, so you always have the latest state to work with.

  195.   shareware version, available on the Internet. This way, you can always use

  197. - Optional program delivery on a CD-ROM, including all add-ons such as
  198.   plugins, translations, help files, etc. for additional payment of $6.00 USD
  199.   shipping and handling.
  200. - Access to a free mailing list to be notified about program's latest news and
  201.   current development.
  202. - Free priority technical support via e-mail for a period of six months.

  204. Registration benefits can be suspended if registered user had violated
  205. license agreement, for example by distributing his personal registration
  206. data to other unlicensed users.

  209. DISTRIBUTION

  212. Evaluation versions of WhereIsIt? are distributed as Shareware. This means
  213. that users are encouraged, subject to restrictions described in the License
  214. Agreement, to share copies of this program with friends, associates and
  215. bulletin boards. Please remember that if you use this software you are
  216. required to pay the registration fee of $39,95 as described in the License
  217. Agreement (LICENSE.TXT).
